The dental hygienist deals with the prevention of oral-dental diseases, and promotes the oral health of patients in order to improve their systemic health as well as their aesthetic and self-esteem; his purpose is prevention and therapy at the level of the oral cavity with consequent systemic implications. He plays an important role in non-surgical maintenance therapy of patients with periodontal disease (periodontitis).
